How to use the running pace calculator
Select a standard race distance or enter your own. If you know your finish time, choose Pace from distance and time. The calculator returns average pace per kilometre, pace per mile, average speed and a cumulative split table. If you know the pace you want to hold, choose Finish time from distance and pace instead.
The calculation is exact arithmetic: average pace equals total time divided by distance. What it cannot predict is how hills, turns, wind, heat, surface, fatigue or aid-station congestion will change your real race. Treat the result as a planning reference, then adapt it to the course and conditions.
Useful half-marathon pace benchmarks
A half marathon is 21.0975 kilometres or 13.1094 miles. Because a few seconds per kilometre accumulate over more than 21 kilometres, small pace differences matter.

Average pace is not the same as race strategy
A calculator gives one constant number. A sensible race plan often uses that number as the centre of a range. Starting a little slower than target pace can reduce the cost of early surges, weaving and excitement. On a flat course in stable conditions, an even effort with a controlled opening is usually easier to execute than banking time early.
Effort matters more than an exact watch number when conditions change. Uphill sections usually require a slower pace at the same effort; downhills may be faster but can increase muscular load. Heat and humidity also raise physiological strain, so forcing a cool-weather target pace can turn a realistic plan into an unsustainable one.
Race pace versus training pace
Your calculated race pace is not the pace for every run. Most endurance programmes deliberately mix easier running with a smaller amount of moderate and harder work. Easy days create space to absorb the sessions that matter; threshold or race-specific workouts rehearse the demands of the event; long runs build durability. Turning every run into a target-pace test usually removes that separation.
For a 12-week half-marathon build, use a recent race or time trial plus honest training history to set initial paces. Reassess if a pace consistently feels much harder or easier than intended. The watch is one input alongside breathing, perceived exertion, terrain and recovery.
How cumulative splits help on race day
Instant GPS pace is noisy. Buildings, tree cover, turns and small measurement errors can make the number jump. Cumulative splits are calmer: compare elapsed time at an official kilometre or mile marker with the table. That tells you whether the overall plan is on track without reacting to every second.
- Use kilometre splits if the course is marked in kilometres and mile splits if it is marked in miles.
- Write down only a few checkpoints for a long event rather than memorising every row.
- Allow for small differences between the racing line and the distance recorded by your watch.
- Judge hills and wind by effort, then return gradually to the target range.

Why does my watch show a different finish time?
Your watch may record slightly more than the official distance because you rarely run the shortest possible line and GPS is not perfect. Auto-pause settings and rounded pace displays can also create differences.
Should I use min/km or min/mile?
Use the unit shown on the course and the one you understand under fatigue. This tool calculates both so you can convert without approximation.
Can this calculator set my training zones?
No. It converts pace, time and speed. Training zones require a separate method and should reflect recent fitness, the purpose of the session and your response to training.
